GCSE - General Certificate of Secondary Education
GCSEs are the main examinations taken by UK students to complete the first stage of secondary or high school education. UK universities usually look for candidates with at least five good passes at GCSE and minimum 2 A-Levels. The GCSE programme is tailored to cover 2 academic years, and for those undertaking the two year course usually takes 8 or 9 subjects. Many students choose an intensive 1 year course, and then take on average 5 subjects. Usual GCSE programme comprises 20-25 hours of tuition per week, conducted in small classes where students can benefit from exceptional amounts of personal attention and feedback (private tuition is also available). At least 20% of a GCSE subject is assessed on coursework undertaken during the academic year, and it is very important that students complete it in time and to a high standard. There is a broad range of GCSEs to choose from, including: Accountancy, Art & Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English Language, English Literature, French, Geography, German, Government & Politics, Graphic Design, History, History of Art, IT, Italian, Law, Mathematics (Pure), Mechanics, Media Studies, Music, Photography, Physics, Psychology, Russian, Sociology, Spanish, Statistics.
